This is what the 2nd semester students of Symbiosis Institute of Operations Management (SIOM), Nashik felt as the institute organized the 4th edition of the annual Mock Investor Summit at their campus on the 19th of January 2018. The event, conducted as part of the syllabus, encouraged students to apply the knowledge gained in subjects such as Global Business Environment, Marketing and Finance into devising strategies to attract investments towards countries that the student teams were required to represent.
With all exchanges done on the basis of a dummy currency, each team of students was required to represent a developing economy. They were then asked to identify potential sectors with huge potentials of investment in the upcoming years, and devise strategies to attract investors to these sectors utilizing the right data and statistics.
The event also participation by industry stalwarts who played the role of Mock Investors.The mock investors for the day were Dr. Satish Baga, Advisor, National Mass Transport Training and Research Institute, MMRDA; Mr. R. Venkat Venkitachalam, Chairman, Bizsol India Services Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Ravindra Mahadeokar, Managing Director, Strama Summit Machinery Pvt. Ltd; Dr. Rajeev Papneja, COO & Exec VP at ESDS Software Solution Pvt Ltd; Mr. Herambh Sahastrabudhe, Founder, Tangent Concepts; Mr. Gopal Krishna Kundan, Head- Western Region, J& K Bank and Mr. Deepak George Thomas Learning Development Manager, Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces. There was also a team of faculties and senior students of the Institute who were also investors.
The Summit, mentored by Dr. Achuta Ratna Paluri, Professor, SIOM, is an initiative to enhance “learning by doing”, as per the philosophies of SIOM.The event has the students divided into different groups of nine students with each group representing a country. The different countries represented were Bulgaria, Ghana, Finland, Senegal, Nigeria, Togo, Oman, Uganda, Bahrain, Hungary, Argentina, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Tanzania and saw motivated participations by the students, who showcased exceptional energy and determination to showcase their talents in every field possible. The students got a chance to understand the trade policies as well as the political, legal, social and economic conditions persisting in different countries.Of the 14 teams that participated, the winners for the event were Team Argentina followed by Team Saudi-Arabia who attracted maximum investments into their country.
The enthralling event ended with words of encouragement and advices from the external panel members and the thoughts of all faculty investors and some of the student investors. Director of the institution, Dr. Vandana Sonwaney shared her thoughts and the certificates were distributed to the winners. Like every year, this year’s Mock Summit 2018 indeed set a higher standards with the participants outdoing themselves in all aspects.
